Neurology is a field of medicine that addresses disorders that affect the nerve system. Neurology focuses on the treatment and diagnosis of various types of disorders and diseases that affect the peripheral and central nervous systems, as well as their covers, blood vessels and all tissue that affects them including muscles. A doctor with a specialization in neurology is referred to as neurologists. Neurologists are doctors who treat diseases that affect the spinal cord, brain and nerves, for example:

• Cerebrovascular diseases, like stroke
• The Central Nervous System, like multiple sclerosis
• Headache disorders
• Brain infections and the peripheral nervous system
• Movement disorders, for instance, Parkinson’s disease, are common.
• Neurodegenerative diseases, like Parkinson’s Disease, Alzheimer’s disease and Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (Lou Gehrig’s Disease)
• Seizure disorders, such as epilepsy
• The spinal cord is a source of pain.

Neurologists don’t perform surgery. When one of their patients needs surgery, they will refer them to an neurosurgeon.
